The days are dark and cold, and the budget news was grim… but just like Santa’s elves, here at the Choral Festival we’re hard at work at the moment to ensure that there are treats in store to lift our spirits! April may now seem like a whole decade away, but once Christmas festivities have passed, the Choral Festival is just around the corner - and what a festival it will be.

Next year will see choirs from as far afield as Japan and Singapore make the journey to Cork, who are sure to bring some Eastern colour as they join with the legions of other international and Irish choirs. 2010 also marks the centenary of Prof Fleischmann, which the Festival will be celebrating with a very special Opening Concert and other events marking the occasion.

Between this and then we’d like to take the opportunity to wish you and yours a very happy and peaceful Christmas and new year and a wonderful 2010 ahead.

All across the world, 12 choirs are now preparing for their visit to Cork this April.
With over 30 applications received for this prestigious international competition, the selected choirs for 2010 will join us from far countries such as Singapore, Philippines and Japan as well as Ireland, Germany, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovenia. In addition to their participation in what is sure to be an outstanding competition for this internationally renowned award, each choir will fill the city with colour and song in a variety of performances throughout the week - find out more here and see which choirs you just don't want to miss!

Return of the Seán O'Riada Trophy competition

The Cork International Choral Festival together with the National Chamber Choir of Ireland are delighted to announce the return of the Seán O’Riada Competition in 2010. The Seán O’Riada Competition is a composition competition which invites the submission of new works from Irish composers.

The winning composition, as selected by an independent assessment board, will become a featured work at the Seminar for New Choral Music at next year’s Festival. The National Chamber Choir of Ireland, conductor Paul Hillier, are artists in residence at the Seminar and the selected work will receive its premiere performance by the NCC during the festival in addition to featuring at a Seminar session in the presence of the composer, and being added to the list of Seminar compositions. Take part in an Anúna workshop in Cork!

On Friday 30th April and Saturday 1st May 2010, Cork International Choral Festival are offering National Adult Choirs and School Choirs the unique opportunity of working closely with conductor and composer Michael McGlynn and the renowned choir An, when they include a McGlynn piece for performance in competition at the Festival.

These workshops will facilitate an understanding of how Anúna’s particular vocal sound is achieved, how the presentation of the music is developed and how it can be incorporated into the general vocal preparation of all choirs.

The Workshop Session for School Choirs will take place on Friday 30th April 2010 and will include actual workshop performance opportunities for a number of selected school choirs who have chosen a piece by McGlynn for performance in competition at the Festival. Members of interested school choirs, their conductors and any interested teachers, school groups, conductors, and general audience are also welcome to attend.

The Workshop Session for National Adult Choirs will take place on Saturday 1st May 2010 and will include actual workshop performance opportunities for a number of selected choirs who have chosen a piece by McGlynn for performance in competition at the Festival. Members of interested choirs, their conductors and any additional interested conductors and general audiences are also.
