World Youth Choir is recruiting new members

News:
October 2008

As Cork International Choral Festival begins to plan towards May 2009, so too does the WORLD YOUTH CHOIR (WYC), a project organized by the International Center for Choral Music (ICCM) and patronized by the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM), Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) and Europa Cantat (EC). WYC is currently recruiting new members (ages 17 to 26) from all over the world – could you be a part?

PRESS RELEASE from the World Youth Choir:

It is with great pleasure that we are able to present to you the WORLD YOUTH CHOIR (WYC), a project organized by the International Center for Choral Music (ICCM) and patronized by the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM), Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) and Europa Cantat (EC).

One of the most interesting musical and intercultural experiences offered to young musicians worldwide

Since the creation of the WYC in 1989, about 90 singers from all over the world come together each summer (July/August) in a different country for two weeks of rehearsals. Following these rehearsals, the choir tours within the host country and neighbouring countries, and presents concerts in major cultural centres and prestigious concert halls. The WYC engages the most renowned choral conductors. Year after year the number of participating countries increases. Today, more than 40 different nationalities are present in the choir, assuring that all continents are represented.

The artistic scope of the project is in itself a major achievement, but the WYC also represents in terms of personal relationships a unique experience for its members. The WYC has been appointed Artist for Peace by UNESCO. Without speeches, without banners, the WYC presents its message of music, international peace, and brotherhood.

The selection of singers for the summer session 2009 in Gent, Belgium begins now!

The summer session 2009 will take place in July in Gent, Belgium. The session is organized in collaboration with Koor & Stem, Vlaams Federatie van Jonge Koren, the City of Gent, the Province of Oost Vlaanderen, and the Vlaamse Gemeenschap.

The WYC will perform an academic programme based on Early 20th Century choral music with Johan Duijck (Belgium), and a contrasting programme based on contemporary and folk-based choral music from Latin America with Ana María Raga (Venezuela). The choir will tour in Belgium, France, Germany, and The Netherlands.

Every applicant to the WYC has to undergo a live audition in his or her own country or region.

Become a local partner

We would like to ask for your help in recruiting and auditioning singers from your country or region. We are looking for highly trained singers (ages 17 to 26) who study in the vocal departments of music schools and music academies (conservatories, universities).

Should you be interested in learning more about the WYC and the recruitment of singers, please find enclosed the following documents. We realize that this documentation is quite extensive and formal in style, but would happily consider any suggestions that might help adapt our procedures to the musical reality in your area.

Sincerely,
