We are an international choir and would like to participate in the Festival, what is the procedure?
As one of Europe’s premier choral festivals and now going into its 56th year, the Cork International Choral Festival has long been attracting choirs from all over the world to attend, either in a competitive capacity as part of the prestigious Fleischmann International Trophy Competition, or to participate non-competitively.
- Fleischmann International Trophy Competition: Each year some of the finest amateur choirs are selected to compete for the prestigious Fleischmann International Trophy. The selected choirs also have an opportunity to perform in a range of additional festival activities throughout the week including fringe concerts, church and public performances. The competition is open to choirs of international standing with a minimum of 20 / maximum of 70 voices (except specifically children’s choirs). In competition choirs are expected to present: A programme of a cappella music consisting of either three or four contrasting works whose total duration is between ten and twelve minutes. The contrasting programme must represent an historically-balanced and coherent range of styles and must include: a work composed before 1750; an original work by a living composer; and a work by a composer of the choir’s native country. - Non-competitive Participation; Each year a number of very fine choirs are also selected to participate in the non-competitive strand of the festival. Participating non-competitively gives choirs the opportunity to present informal performances in various locations across the city, while having the possibility to meet with other choirs, see some of Ireland’s beautiful countryside, attend some of the festival events, sing, mingle, and soak up the festival atmosphere here in Cork. The Festival offers the following range of activities to non-competitive choirs: Various Public performances as part of the Festival’s popular fringe series; A performance at a mass or church service in one of the city’s churches; A performance, on a selected basis, in one of the festival’s concerts. We are an Irish choir and would like to participate in the Festival, what is the procedure?
The national competition structure provides choirs of a wide range of types, sizes and levels from throughout Ireland an opportunity to participate in the Cork International Choral Festival. As choirs may enter more than one competition over Festival weekend, choirs can make the most of performance opportunities and present a wider competition repertoire, whether participating in the Premier Competitions, the Light Jazz and Popular section, Church Music – or all three! With several Special Awards presented over the course of the Festival, choirs are also given an added incentive to explore contemporary Irish repertoire and works in Irish.
In addition to competition, choirs are also encouraged to avail of the opportunity to participate in public performances and sing at church visits during their stay in Cork. Irish choir members will furthermore have the unique opportunity of attending a diverse range of concerts and competitive sessions while at the Festival. Hear some of the world’s finest international choirs as they compete for the prestigious Fleischmann International Trophy, and then mingle with them after at the Festival Club!
Our Schools Competitions continue to provide a platform for schools choirs all over the country to perform in this prestigious event, and by their participation to gain awareness of the wider choral community of which they are a part.
