Ethnic Voices - Dona Rosa & Huun Huur Tu

Cork International Choral Festival is pleased to once again present our Ethnic Voices concert, an evening showcasing the very best in modern interpretation of folk vocal styles. This year's programme combines the utterly unique and compelling sounds of two very distinct vocal traditions. On their return visit to Cork, don't miss the opportunity to hear Huun Huur Tu's astonishing throat-singing, as they perform 'old and forgotten songs' from their native Tuva, near the Mongolian border. The second half of this programme features the haunting and inimitable voice of Dona Rosa performing her own special brand of Portuguese Fado, with traditional accompaniment.


HUUN HUUR TU
They are profoundly mysterious sounds; the traditional, ritual laryngeal chants of the Central Asian land of Tuva. With this unique song technique, the singers from the steppe develop an enthralling sound which is multilayered, rich in undertones and overtones. Something that is no longer a mystery, however, is the Tuvan quartet HUUN HUUR TU whose world-wide success has made them an established name in international world music, thanks to their concerts, tours and projects of traditional throat singing....

DONA ROSA   Fados and traditional songs from Portugal
Rosa Francelina Dias Martins was born in 1957 in Lisbon to a very poor family. At the age of four she contracted meningitis which left her completely blind. She lived in Lisbon up to the age of 20, at which stage she was sent back to her family in Northern Portugal. But knowing that her family could not accept her blindness, she took the first train back to Lisbon instead of the bus to her family.... more

It began with the place: Leipzig. The Saxon metropolis of music is not only home to the famous Gewandhaus but also a fertile cultural ground for other musical development. The long distinguished Thomasschule is a particularly abundant source of multifaceted vocal endeavors.
