To commemorate the centenary of Anglo-Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford (1852 – 1924), the combined forces of the Cork School of Music [CSM] Symphony Orchestra and Fleischmann Choir will present the composer’s iconic Stabat Mater. First performed at the Leeds Triennial Festival in October 1907 and subtitled a “symphonic cantata”, the work channels the medieval Latin text in a dramatic portrayal of Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection, and promise of eternal salvation.
The CSM Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of John O’Brien, will begin the Opening Gala Concert with a performance of Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor, a cornerstone of the symphonic repertoire and much admired for its extensive expressive lyricism and triumphant, unassailing finale.
