Chorale Abakiza

Burundi

The ABAKIZA choir, which is among the most prestigious choirs in Burundi, was formed in 1992 by Dr. Mukama Ernest. The group performs a wide range of choral music of the highest quality for the public. Passionate about music, more and more singers from several regions of the country are joining the choir, which currently has more than 40 members. Through a combination of a scholarly and emotional approach to choral music, the ensemble expands all aspects of the artistic spectrum. Joining some of the nation's most accomplished artists and the National Capital Region's finest choristers, the professionalism of the choir has received national and international recognition. Under the Direction of NDIKUMANA GODEFROID, Director of the choir since 2007, he has been hailed for his always ‘exciting’ and ‘exceptional’ performances at the national level.

The ABAKIZA choir has performed for audiences across the country and in all East African countries including South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Namibia and Cameroon. One of the choir's most historic moments was performing on stage at Burundi's National Independence Day for 6 consecutive years. A significant milestone occurred in the 2016 - 2017 season when the "Golden Anniversary" concert was broadcast nationwide. The concert won three Silvy Awards for Radio Télévision Nation du Burundi (RTNB). RTNB continues to broadcast this signature performance during sections of its membership campaigns.

The ABAKIZA Choir continues to share their musical gifts on many great stages, with many famous dignitaries and performers, which makes them cultural ambassadors of the city of Bujumbura on the stages of each country they visit.
