St Mary's College

Derry

Derry has a reputation for being the “City of Song” and St Mary’s College choir is following in this long-standing choral tradition. The choir has a very active role in the community singing at: the local hospice, music festivals, religious services, and community events. The choir are regular participants and award winners at the local historic Derry Feis. We were honored to perform at the Derry Feis’ Centenary Gala this year.

St Mary’s choir have featured with the talented Jazz pianist, Jamie Cullum in his BBC documentary: ‘The Piano pilgrimage’ and as a result supported him on stage at the: City of Derry Jazz Festival.

Among our highlights and successes over the past couple of years are: ‘The All Island Choir Competition’, Bangor Choral Festival, being awarded the Bishops Shield at the Derry Feis, first winners of the inaugural ‘City of Derry Choral Competition’ and being awarded, ‘Choir of the Day’ in ‘Choir of The Year Competition’ in Glasgow, 2014.

Unfortunately, our performance opportunities have been limited throughout the past two years, so we are very excited to be competing in the Cork International Choral Festival today. The girls cover a vast repertoire of music and are very committed to the choir. They give their time freely to rehearse frequently at lunch time, after school, at weekends and during their scheduled holidays in the lead up to competition.

The choir looks forward to building links and supporting the local community this year.
