How many of these sorts of phrases do we use as choral conductors every day? And for those who are fortunate enough to work with singers with quality vocal training, perhaps they are enough. But for the rest of our choral community who work simultaneously with a mix of choir members with some level of training and those with virtually no training at all, the conductor serves not only as the musical leader, but also the vocal coach for the entire choir. But how do we get across complex individual ideas about breath energy to large groups of people of different backgrounds? By utilising simple eurhythmic movements tied in with elements implemented in our conducting gesture, we can teach major ideas about quality singing quickly to a broad spectrum of singers, regardless of age or previous training.
