NUKU Choir

Estonia

NUKU choir was founded in 2010.

The largest portion of the choir's repertoire is made of choir music by splendid contemporary Estonian composers. In Estonia, the choir is also known for our theatrical concerts and performances.

Besides Estonia, we have staged our concert performances at theatre festivals in Avignon, France and Edinburgh, Scotland, and performed in Poland, Canada and Sweden.

Our performances are alternately theatrical and chamber music concerts.

Along with the wonderful Estonian composers, like Veljo Tormis, Tõnu Kõrvits, Siim Aimla, Arvo Pärt, Lepo Sumera, Erki-Sven Tüür and others, NUKU choir has also sang the music of Frank Martin, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Johann Sebastian Bach, Thomas Morley and many more.

We have participated in choir competitions in Estonia, Italy, Belarus and received awards.

NUKU choir has been nominated for Choir of the Year by Estonian Choral Association.

And of course we partake in the magnificent and famous traditional Estonian Song Festivals.

As a child, conductor Reeda Toots (1961) sang in Ellerhein, the most famous children's choir in Estonia, for 11 years, then in Tõnu Kaljuste's chamber choir (today known as Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir). She graduated from Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in 1984 in acting and received an MA in 2014 in Dramatic Art and Theatre Pedagogy, has worked as an actress, director and drama coach. Toots found her way back to choir music with the foundation of NUKU choir.

She has been nominated twice for Conductor of the Year by Estonian Choral Association and rewarded as Best Conductor at the choir competition in Riva Del Garda.

Besides NUKU choir performances Toots has also directed several other Estonian choirs' concerts and grand choir events.
