Coralia of the University of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico

Founded in 1982 by its current conductor, Carmen Acevedo Lucío, Coralia —the University of Puerto Rico Concert Choir— is a renowned ensemble that forms part of the long-standing choral tradition of the Río Piedras Campus, which dates to 1936. Composed of students and alumni from the University of Puerto Rico, its members have proven choral experience and solid musical skills. Conceived as a choral workshop to maximize the musical ability of its members and focus on preparing repertoire of a more challenging level, Coralia performs works from all musical periods and styles, as well as music by Latin American and Puerto Rican composers and arrangers.

Coralia’s singers have participated professionally with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra in operatic galas of CulturArte de Puerto Rico, and in the Casals Festival, under the baton of important local and international conductors, such as: Margaret Hillis, Krzysztof Penderecki, Helmuth Rilling, Yoav Talmi, Guillermo Figueroa, Gustavo Dudamel and Maximiano Valdes.

Throughout the last four decades they have represented Puerto Rico in numerous festivals and international choral competitions, distinguishing themselves as the Puerto Rican choral group with the most presence in the world, having visited: Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, France, Canada and the United States, as well as numerous countries in South America and the Caribbean. They have received 15 first places in the polyphonic and sacred music categories, 4 second places, 3 third places, and, on two occasions, "Best Choir" among all the participating choirs.

During May 2013, Coralia participated in the International Chamber Choir Competition of Marktoberdorf, Germany, as well as being declared the winner at the Florilège Vocal de Tours in France, thereby classifying for the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing 2014, in Debrecen, Hungary. Their most recent participation was in the International Choral Competition Gallus – Maribor in Slovenia -April 2023- where they earned fourth place.

Coralia is recognized as a unique Puerto Rican choral group that has left an indelible mark on its more than 100 former members. These singers have contributed enormously to Coralia’s remarkable history.
