Scoil Barra Naofa Choir is made up of primary school children in 2nd to 6th class. All pupils are students of Scoil Barra Naofa, Monkstown. They are co-ordinated by staff members, Jacqui Scriven and Rachel Hayes. The newly-formed choir promotes bringing children together through the shared love of music while keeping the children central.

The choir have participated in local events in Monkstown such as carol services and church ceremonies as well as events within the school such as open days, graduation ceremonies and grandparents’ day. In 2024, the choir participated in the Cór Fhéile in Cork City Hall. Recently, talented pupils within the school have began accompanying the school choir; playing guitar, tin whistle, violin and concertina etc. Currently, we are preparing for a Local History event in our school which takes place on the 6th of March whereby we will perform for members of the Monkstown community. All of these experiences have inspired a love of singing and performing in our participants.

Choir practice typically takes place once per week in school. A session involves singing songs from the choirs’ repertoire, learning new songs and experimenting with arrangements. The choir has a tradition of ending practice with a member of the choir choosing a song for us to sing together. This is in line with our child-centred goal with fundamental to our choir.
