László Nemes

Hungary

László Norbert Nemes has recently been appointed co-artistic director of the Nationale Jeugdkoren of the Netherlands (National Youth Choirs of The Netherlands). Together with co-artistic director Irene Verburg, he is following in the footsteps of Wilma ten Wolde, under whose artistic leadership the Nationaal Jeugdkoor established a highly prestigious position in the musical life of the Netherlands.

At the beginning of his career, László’s artistic activities were connected to the Hungarian Radio Children's Choir, one of the most illustrious ensembles of Hungarian musical life, a regular guest on many concert stages around the world.

Since September 2014, he has been artistic director of the New Liszt Ferenc Chamber Choir, currently the artist-in-residence choral ensemble of the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. In 2018, together with Péter Erdei, he founded the National Youth Choir of Hungary, with which they gave many successful concerts both at home and abroad.

In addition to his artistic work, László Nemes has a significant university teaching career. He was director of the Kodály Institute of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music for fifteen years. Currently he teaches choral conducting and music theory at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag (Royal Conservatory of Music, The Hague) and teaches some courses online at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music (Budapest, Hungary). He is guest professor and academic consultant at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. His main fields of expertise are musicianship training according to the Kodály Concept, choral conducting and choral music education. His most recent publications include the chapter on Kodály’s music pedagogical work in The Oxford Handbook of Choral Pedagogy, published in 2017 by Oxford University Press.

László Nemes has conducted, taught, held workshops, master classes and seminars all across Europe and overseas including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, the Korean Republic, Singapore and the United States of America several times.

In recognition of his artistic activities László Nemes received the Bartók-Pásztory Award in 2005. In March 2017 he was decorated with the Golden Cross of the Hungarian Cross of Merit.
