The Mater Dei Academy Choir began – as did the foundation of the Academy – in earnest in the Autumn of 2020. The choir was then under the direction of Darragh Hannigan. More recently, the choir has been directed by Fergus O’Rourke and Derbhile Buckley. Most music sung by the choir throughout its short history has been sacred music, ranging from Renaissance polyphony to religious texts set to music by Seán and Peadar Ó Riada. To date, the choir has not entered into any competitions but can be heard singing at liturgies in churches around the city, most often the North Cathedral where they provide music for Mass every week.
